2008 Topps Stadium Club Baseball Cards Set Guide

This set came out in November of 2008 as a premium, autograph-filled product. Its manufacturer-suggested price was $25 per pack, $300 per hobby box. The hobby boxes contain 12 packs of 5 cards per box, with an autograph in every pack, and about half of those rookie autos. One Yankee Stadium relic (memorabilia) card per box, one rookie card per pack. Rookie cards were guaranteed numbered to 1499 or less.

Since release, a cheaper variation of the hobby boxes has come out making the set much more like a base set, with 24 packs of 5 cards each. These boxes still contained one rookie card per pack, but without serial numbering. The autograph rate was reduced to a more typical one per box, rather than per pack.

Probably the biggest oddity with this set is the cut-out Joe Dimaggio card. Card #94 is glaringly missing from the official checklist, in the middle of several legends of the game, like Honus Wagner and Mickey Mantle. Some collectors noticed a cut-out border of a card in packs of 2008 Stadium Club, with only minor details visible. Some cut-outs revealed the number 94 on the card, and the letter "J" at the beginning of the player's name. The photo border matched a photograph of Joe Dimaggio as well, revealing that Topps had apparently planned a Dimaggio card to fit with their other all-time great base cards in this set. No official word from Topps ever confirmed the card's existence, but it is apparent that Topps had issues with getting rights to printing a Dimaggio card late on in production, and had to cut them out from printing sheets, allowing some borders to get through. The card sold for $60 and more on eBay early on in the set's life, but has since been deemed nearly worthless as more and more of these borders made it through to consumers.

Also interesting: The rookie cards in this set have two different cards for each player, with two different photos. One photo is slightly rarer than the other.
